Treating Dry Skin
Phyllis Howard just came back from skiarea and was complaining to her friend Emily Reynolds
about the terrible problems she had with dry and cracked skin on the slopes. Emily told her that
she had the exact same skin problem at Bellevaux, France. An very experienced skiier laid out the
three things to keep your skin in good condition in the cold. She will use that on her trip to
Schladming, Austria coming up next month.
Winter is the worst time for our skin. A good many people suffer with itchy, dry, flaking,
irritated and painful skin. Running out to the local boutique to find the most well known healing
lotions and creams to help soothe the pain and heal the cracks for moments of relief. The bad news
is most folks are overlooking the vital and simple methods to not only get a major improvement with
your dry, chapped and cracked skin, but also help prevent it.
We as humans are made up mostly of water. For some reason, in cold weather, we don't think of
the need to make sure that we are drinking enough water. During the summer, when we are losing
fluids through sweat and doing yard work, we know we need to drink water to help replace the water
as we lost. In the winter the cold air does much the same to our body. It withdraws that water
right out of us. This then cracks and chaps our skin, leaving it flaking and itchy. Making sure
that you are still drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water a day will improve the chances in the battle
over dry and cracked skin. Try it for the next two weeks and you will begin to see a noticeable
improvement in your skin in a matter of days.
Staying with the requirement of moisture, a good moisturizing lotion is also a good idea. Try to
get one that fits for your skin type so that you aren't going to end up with oily uncomfortable
skin. I recommend a cream as opposed to a lotion in the cold, because a cream is thicker and more
protective of the skin. You should also spend a moment or so and read the label. The cream or
lotion that you use in the summer probably won't be appropriate in the winter. Avoid one with
alcohol in the first few ingredients, as alcohol will actually dry out your skin, just what you
dont' want.
Make sure to dress the right way in cold weather. Don't just write this one off, think this one
over. The more exposed areas of skin that you have increases the opportunity that the cold air has
to remove the moisture from your skin. Layer your clothes and let that next to the skin layer be
clothes that are made out of cotton. Cotton will let you skin breathe, will keep you warm and won-t
irritate your skin.
If you follow these three simple methods, you will not only start getting relief from that
really dry skin, but you will help prevent your skin from becoming dry. Drinking plenty of fluids,
the right moisturizing cream and appropriate clothing and you will have healthy, well hydrated,
comfortable skin covering you.
